Signs and Symptoms Your Pet is in Pain

When people are in pain, it’s pretty hard to miss most of the time. We complain about our aching back. We yell out because we’ve stepped on something pointy. We limp because it hurts to put pressure on a leg and we lay down in the middle of the day in complete silence and darkness because we have a migraine.

Pets, unfortunately, aren’t always quite so easy to read. First off, they can’t tell us if something hurts because of that whole not-talking thing. And while things like limping or whining every time they put pressure on an area are pretty sure signs of a pet in pain, symptoms aren’t always so clear – especially if your pet is of the “walk it off” type.

Still, there are a number of more subtle things that you can watch for if you’re worried that your pet might be hurting more than it’s letting on.

Even if they’re trying to be tough, pets in pain tend to be more vocal, unless this is paired with a specific physical action, it’s not always easy to spot immediately.

A hurt pet may express this vocally in a number of ways: whining, whimpering, yelping, growling, snarling, and even howling. If he’s vocalising more than normal, see what’s up.

Pets in pain will often lick their paws constantly in an attempt to sooth themselves. When dogs are hurt, one of their first instincts is to clean and care for the wound by licking it as well. This is obvious if it’s a visible wound like a cut, but often even when pain is internal, dogs will lick that area in an attempt to fix the problem. Pets will also lick their paws to rub their eyes if they have eye pain. If you notice excessive self-grooming in general, seek the help of a qualified animal health specialist.

Many Pets will sleep more when in pain because they’re trying to heal or because it’s too hard to move around. A loss of appetite and changes in the way and amount they drink are common.

Is your pet panting even though it hasn’t been exercising? Does their breath seem faster or shallower? These things can be signs that it hurts them to take a breath.

Some pets, when they aren’t feeling well, try to keep away from you and may even hide. Others will be all over you, seeking affection constantly.

Caring For Your Pets

Fleas are tiny, black, blood-sucking parasites that can make your dog extremely uncomfortable and ill. They are commonly found in all areas of Australia. If your dog has fleas, it may exhibit the following symptoms, frequent scratching, small red marks (bites) on the skin, black gritty material in the coat.

Close inspection of your dogs skin can reveal the fleas themselves, which are usually concentrated around the lower back or base of the tail. Some dogs are allergic to fleas and, once bitten, can develop flea allergy dermatitis which can have serious consequences, such as severe itching or self harm due to the intense irritation.

Flea treatment and prevention can take the form of topical applications, sprays, shampoos or collars. When treating your dog for fleas, you must also consider other items or areas that your dog uses. This includes its bedding, as well as the soft furnishing, carpets and rugs. Vacuuming, washing, mopping, spraying and the use of flea bombs may be required. If using chemicals, you will need to consider their suitability for the animals and any family members with allergies. Here are some Natural Alternatives…

The Benefits of Water for Your Pets

Cats and dogs, need fresh water too and plenty of it. The longer the water sits, the more oxygen it loses. Giving your pet 10 drops of Oxygenate in their water will replenish the levels of oxygen as well as eliminating the harmful substances found in most water supplies today. Clean the bowl often and keep it filled with fresh, Oxygenated Water. You will find that your pets will drink more water and; drinking more water can also reduce urinary tract disorders in cats and dogs. With water being a crucial part of a pet’s health, it is no wonder that many pet supply manufacturers offer water fountains, water filters, special bowls, special dispensers and more. When it comes down to it, a stainless steel or glass bowl filled with fresh oxygenated water from a home filtration system with a few drops of Oxygenate in it works better than any fancy watering system.
